Extension Centre
The extension centre, established by MSW (Aided) department in collaboration with MCJ-Guild of Service, had adopted the marginalised Below Poverty Line Community(Slum) in Chetpet area. The members associated with this centre are Dr.S.Raja Samuel (Principal), Shri. HimaniDatar, Hon. Secretary,Guild of Service,Dr.J.S.Gunavathy, Head, MSW(Aided),Mrs. Uma, Executive officer, Dr. P. Amuthalakshmi, the extension coordinator, Department faculty members and students of I& II year MSW. The main work of this centre is to examine the demographic characteristics of the slum dwellers and know more about the problems and constraints of residing in slums. A survey has been undertaken and the universe of the study is the residents in and around Chetpet Slum, namely the residents of Mangalapuram, Brindhavan, M.S Nagar and Jaganathapuram. Accordingly their living conditions, health, hygiene, level of awareness about government schemes, and economic issues have been analysed. The area also has a ‘Study Centre’ established by the Guild of Service. The poor students who are studying in Mary ClubwalaJadhav (MCJ) School get to benefit from it. The MSW students from first and second years have been volunteers in the Guild of Service Study Centre Project for tutoring young girls between 3rd standard and 9th standard from 1st July 2019 till mid-March 2020. The department also takes interest in reaching out to external sources (NGOs &private assignments, emergency interventions etc.) through this centre.
Extension Centre
The Outreach and Community Extension Centre of our college serves as a catalyst for social change by fostering social responsibility and community engagement among students and faculty. Through structured programmes, field interventions and collaborative initiatives with local communities and organizations, the Centre works to address pressing social issues and promote inclusive development. It bridges academic knowledge with community needs, nurturing experiential learning, social empathy and sustainable impact.
Co-ordinator’s Desk
It gives me great pleasure to share the vision and mission of the Outreach and Community Extension Centre. The Centre strives to be a catalyst for social change by connecting the academic community with the larger society. Guided by the core values of equity, inclusivity, integrity, responsibility and service, our programmes are designed to instill in students a deep sense of social commitment and civic responsibility. We engage with communities through need-based interventions, awareness drives, training programmes and collaborative projects that promote justice, dignity and sustainable development.
We believe that education extends beyond classrooms and our initiatives nurture empathy, leadership, accountability and respect for diversity, preparing students to become socially responsible citizens and to become leaders of social transformation. With the active participation of students, faculty and stakeholders, we aspire to build bridges of learning and service that contribute to an equitable and inclusive society.
Co-ordinator’s Desk
As the coordinator of the MSSW extension centre, I feel grateful for the wonderful opportunity to collaborate with men, women, children, adolescents, the elderly, the differently abled, and those who expect somebody’s interventions to lift themselves up. The extension centre is the ideal platform where one can reach the community and analyse their needs and wants. To help those in need, the centre has been collaborating with government sectors regarding suitable schemes, health officials for medical camps, sports personnel to motivate youth, and career guidance from NGOs. It gives me great happiness and satisfaction to know how many people we have reached out to and helped.
