About
The Consumer Club of Madras School of Social Work (MSSW) is a student-driven initiative dedicated to creating awareness about the rights and responsibilities of consumers in today’s fast-changing world. We believe that responsible consumption is key to building a just and sustainable society—something that aligns closely with the values of social work.
At MSSW, the Consumer Club is proudly coordinated by students of BSW I Year. Each year, first-year social work students take the lead in organizing meaningful activities and events under this club. This not only helps them learn about consumer rights, laws, and ethical consumption, but also gives them a platform to apply these learnings in the community.
Students use creative and culturally relevant methods—like street theatre, folk arts, and interactive workshops—to engage with the school students, the public and spread consumer awareness at the grassroots level. These efforts encourage people to make informed choices, understand their rights, and hold producers accountable.
Co-ordinator’s Desk
As the Faculty Coordinator of the Consumer Club, I truly believe that each day, we as student/citizen engage in consumption—be it of goods, services, or even information. Some of this is necessary, but much of it isn’t. In today’s fast-paced world, overconsumption has become a habit rather than a need.
I strongly believe that Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production holds the key to solving many of the problems we face today. When we consume more, it drives unnecessary production. This, in turn, leads to the overuse of our natural and human resources, eventually paving the way for monopolies and imbalance in society.
By choosing to consume responsibly, we don’t just make better choices for ourselves—we contribute to a healthier planet and a more equitable world. Responsible consumption isn’t just about reducing waste; it’s about becoming responsible citizens who care about the future.
