COVID -19 Response Mission
As we are experiencing the shocks of COVID 2019 since March 2010. It affects all sections of the society particularly the vulnerable sections of the community such as daily wage workers, construction workers, agricultural labours. The worst affected people are migrant workers, homeless people. The entire informal sector livelihood has become standstill. Government with its department has been implementing disaster management actions in best of their ability. Civil society Organisations such as NGOs, trade unions, grass root volunteer movements, residential associations, Panchayat Raj Institutions will be reaching the community in their own style with available resources.
Madras School of social Work as an academic Institution has to play its creative role in addressing the present challenges arise out of COVID 19 with a short- and long-term focus keeping the disaster management cycle in their mind as part of witnessing responsible social Institution. MSSW involved in the last two decades in the major disasters such as Poonju earth quake , Tsunami , Thane cyclone , Chennai floods and Kaja Cyclone and gained experiences in reaching out communities through their student and public support. The alumni association and some of the alumni has rich experiencing in the areas of disaster Management. it is the right time in MSSW to establish Centre for Disaster Management and consolidate the experiences and learnings from the disaster response from the last two decades and gain insights from the present involvement in COVID 19 .
The Purpose of the Response Mission
- To evolve concreate actions and support for the vulnerable communities through volunteer support.
- To Provide dry ration and reach out the vulnerable communities through Corporation community Kitchen.
- To Provide psycho social care for the people who are in need of counselling services through online platform.
- To harness the expertise of the alumni in the areas of disaster response.
- To raise the resources to address the needs of the vulnerable communities affected by COVID 19.
- To establish centre for disaster Management in MSSW to consolidate the experiences gained through COVID 19 and influence the govt. policies and programmes through action research and policy dialogue in the areas of disaster cycle.
Strategy in the COVID 19 response mission

- Identify the needs of the vulnerable communities affected by COVID 19 through our social media and volunteers.
- Working through NGOs particularly Alumni NGOs to reach out the vulnerable communities
- Disseminate the information related to COVID 19 and popularise through our social media.
- Contact the alumni and their expertise in the areas of disaster management and incorporate their ideas and experiences in the present mission.
