Madras School of Social Work, Chennai is one of the Empanelled Training Institution to train NSS Programme officers.The Govt. of India launched the National Services Scheme in 1969 and established Training, Orientation and Research Centers exclusively for NSS in reputed in Social Work Institutions such as Tata Institute of Social Science, Delhi School of Social Work and Madras School of Social Work to train the Programme Officers.

The TORC of the Madras School of Social Work has been involved in Training, Orientation and Research activities related to youth since 1970. The centre has organized number of General Orientation Courses and Refresher Courses for all the NSS Programme officers in the two states Tamilnadu and Pondicherry respectively. 

In the year 2011 Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports authorized Madras School of Social Work as empanelled training institution to train the new and untrained NSS Programme Officers covering all the four major Directorates namely Directorate of College Education, School Education, Technical Education and Teachers Training Education in Tamilnadu and Pondicherry.
