Three Days State Level Training of Trainers (ToT) for Family Counsellors on Effective Counselling

U.G. Department of Social Work (BSW) of Madras School of Social Work organized “Three Days State Level Training of Trainers (ToT) for Family Counsellors on Effective Counselling” in Association With Tamil Nadu State Social Welfare Board, Central Social Welfare Board, (Ministry Of Women And Child Development) and Directorate of Social Welfare, Government of Tamilnadu from 21st, 22nd & 23rd of February 2017. Mr. G.Perumalsamy Joint Secretary, Tamilnadu Social Welfare Board, is the chief guest. The programme started with Tamilthai Valithu and College song by BSW Chior. Professor Mrs. S.Sudarmathy welcomed the gathering. Professor Mrs. P.K.Vathani Head of the Department gave the Key note Address. In her speech she emphasized the importance of strengthening the family and its values. Dr. S. Raja Samuel Principal cum Secretary of MSSW gave the presidential address. In his address he mentioned the importance of a counsellor and the need to update their knowledge according to the changing society. He added that families are the building blocks of the society. Dr. R. Subhasini Dean Self Finance Courses, MSSW gave the special address on the importance of counselling in todays context. The Chief Guest Perumalsamy emphasized the role of counsellors in family counselling and the efforts taken by the Government to enhance the same. Mr. T. Rufus Singh gave the Vote of thanks.

The family counsellors and the protection officers across the Tamilnadu participated. This training was funded by Directorate of Social Welfare Guindy, ONGC and other resources.

The following topics were covered by various resource persons,

Day – 1

  • Session 1: Effective Techniques of Family Counselling
  • Session 2: Practical session on Counselling Techniques
  • Session 3: Counselling and Social Work Practice

Day – 2

  • Session 1: Family Counselling Approaches
  • Session 2: Therapeutic Interventions in Family Counselling
  • Session 3: Practical session on Therapeutic Interventions
  • Session 4: Genetic Counselling

Day – 3

  • Session 1: Networking for effective rehabilitative services
  • Session 2: Case Presentation/Case sharing
  • Session 3: Challenges of a Counsellor


Valedictory Function was held on 23.02.2017 at 4.00pm. Dr. A. Thirumagal Rajam welcomed the gathering. Mr. G. Perumalsamy delivered the valedictory address and distributed the certificates. During the feedback session the participants shared their experience and felt that the session was very useful for their profession. The 3 days training came to an end with vote of thanks by Prof. S.Xavier Vivek Jerry.
