The International Day of Older Persons - 2015 was observed by the students of U.G, Department of Social Work (BSW), MSSW, on 1st of October 2015, under the theme,’ Social integration of Senior Citizens: Youth Participation-A way forward”, in line with UN theme for this year ‘Sustainability and Age Inclusiveness in the Urban Environment. The inaugural ceremony began with the release of purple coloured helium balloon by our chief guest for the day, Mrs.B.Valarmathi, Honourable minister for Social Welfare and Nutritious Noon Meal Programme. The inaugural session started with the welcome address delivered by Mrs.P.K.Vathani, Head, U.G, department of Social Work, MSSW. This was followed by the inaugural address delivered by the chief guest for the day, Mrs.B.Valarmathi, Honourable Minister for Social Welfare and Nutritious Noon Meal Programme, Government of Tamil Nadu. The presidential address was delivered by Mr.C.D.Jose, President, SSER. Dr.Jayanthi and Mrs.Kalyani were Guest of Honours’. The Chief Guest and guest of Honours were introduced by the faculty members, Mr. S. Xavier Vivek Jerry, Dr.A. Thirumagal Rajam, Mrs.S. Sudarmathy, Assistant professor, U.G, department of Social Work, MSSW. The felicitation address was delivered by Dr.R. Subhashini, Dean (Self Finance), MSSW. The inaugural ceremony came to an end with the vote of thanks delivered by Mr.T.Rufus Singh, Assistant professor, U.G, department of Social Work, MSSW. Cultural programmes were organized by 2nd year students of U.G, Department of Social Work (BSW).
More than 120 elders participated from TANSOVA, Sathyalok Charitable Trust, Little sisters for poor, Corporation shelter home, AWARD and SIGA. Students of U.G, department of social work (BSW) offered gifts to the Elders.
Towards the very end, the students of BSW Department performed a human formation of the number 'Sixty' which symbolizes the UN logo "60+ counts" - beginning of the elderly phase.
