The NSS Unit of Madras School of Social Work organized a Special Camp in the adopted village, Koduveli, Thiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu, from 10th February, 2018 to 17th February, 2018. The special camp was organized by Mr. T. Rufus Singh, NSS Programme Officer, and MSSW. A total of 50 NSS volunteers participated in the camp. NSS Volunteers undertaken Pre-Camp preparatory activities on 10th and 11th Feb, 2018. The students were provided accommodation at the College of Food and Dairy Technology, Alamathi, Thiruvallur District.
The inauguration of the NSS Special Camp was held on 12th February, 2018 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Koduveli village. The Guests for the day were Mrs. P. K. Vathani, Head of BSW Department, Madras School of Social Work, and Mr. Anbu, Ex-President, Koduveli Panchayat, Mrs. Sudarmathy Gururajan, Assistant Professor, Madras School of Social Work; Mr. Kirubakaran, Founder, Holy Heart Home Mission; Mr. S. Xavier Vivek Jerry, Assistant Professor, Madras School of Social Work; and Mr. Anbu, Advocate , Ms.Nikita Sunny,Assistant Professor,MSSW. The Guests were welcomed by Mr. T. Rufus Singh, NSS Programme Officer, MSSW.
Programmes (Awareness Programmes, Veterinary Camp, Workshop for Women & Children, and Wall-Painting, Clean Up & Tree Plantation Drive etc.)
A number of awareness programmes were conducted for the village community on various topics. The programmes included the folk dances such as Oyilaatam, Karagatam, and Parai Dance. The students distributed awareness pamphlets and Posters to raise awareness on the following areas; 1. Clubfoot 2. Blood Donation 3. HIV/AIDS 4. Symptoms of Tuberculosis 5. ART Care for HIV/AIDS patients 6. Nutritional Foods 7. Ill-effects of Drugs 8. Training for Self-Employment 9. Handwashing Techniques 10. Basic Hygiene Management
A veterinary camp was organized in collaboration with the College of Food and Dairy Technology, Alamathi. A total of 300 goats were given vaccination injections by students of the college and the NSS volunteers. A three-day Embroidery Workshop was conducted for the women of the village. The women of Indira Nagar area were given training on embroidery methods to enhance their employability skills. Awareness on Breast Cancer, Anaemia, and Menstrual Hygiene were also given to the women.
A three-day workshop was conducted for the children of the Government Primary School at Koduveli. The workshop consisted of various educative sessions such as Personal Hygiene , Good Touch and Bad Touch, Quiz Competition ,Dance Workshop , Origami Workshop , Interactive Storytelling Workshop , Drawing and Colouring Competition
The volunteers took up the task of painting the walls of the Government Primary School, Koduveli to make them look more attractive to the children for learning. The students started the day with clearing unwanted bushes in areas that were identified for tree plantation. All unnecessary shrubs were cleared during the day. The NSS UNIT collaborated with “Haridham Foundation”, an NGO working for environmental issues for the tree plantation drive. A total of 40 native saplings were provided free by the NGO for plantation in the village.
The valedictory function was held on 16th February, 2018 (Friday) .The Chief Guests for the day were Dr. S. Raja Samuel, Principal, Madras School of Social Work, and Dr. Bhaskaran, Dean, College of Food and Dairy Technology. The NSS volunteers exhibited their talents through cultural programmes. Dr. Manjula, Assistant Professor, Madras School of Social Work, welcomed the cheif guests .A detailed report about the various activities conducted were presented by NSS Volunteer,Ms. Preethi Kennedy. Mr. Rufus Singh, NSS Programme Officer, MSSW gave vote of thanks.
