The annual inter departmental English debate of MSSW held under the auspices of the English department took place on the 19th of February 2018 in the auditorium. The topic of the debate was “Is Media Sensitising or Sensationalising the News Today.” Students from Team BSC faced off with Team BSW, with Team BSC arguing for the topic, that media does sensitise the news while the opposition put forth their case that media only sensationalises news .
Slam poetry by Abhinaya Raju from the BSW and monologues by Vijaya Gowri, Sakina and Pranathi from the BSC department were precussors to the actual debate. The chief guest, Dr. Sam Paul , Director and Legal Head of Paulsons group presided and along with the Principal Dr.Raja Samuel judged the debate. Dr. A. M. Swaminathan the President graced the occasion with his presence
Ms. Priya Sriram, English Head, and organiser, moderated the proceedings. A strong Team BSC comprising Nikita Dhiman, Samohita Das, Krishna.V and Sayoni Mukherjee pitted against Team BSW which was equally and ably represented by Ravina Narayanan, Mokshavathi. A, Annanya. P and Someshwar. S
The chief guest Dr. Sam Paul appreciated the contestants for their participation. The principal Dr. Raja Samuel in his address praised the students for their monologues and slam poetry and pointed out the powerful way the debaters concluded their arguments.
Team BSC knicked Team BSW to the winner’s spot by a mere whisker of one point for the second year in a row. The best speaker awards were given to Nikita Dhiman and Someshwar .The teams and the performers were awarded certificates and gift vouchers by the Chief Guest.
