Special Lecture on FOOD ADULTERATION

The BELIGHT Student Consumer Club of MSSW organized a special lecture on “Food Adulteration” on 28th July, 2017 at the Conference Hall, MSSW Campus. The Director of CONCERT (A Centre for Consumer Education, Research, Teaching, Training and Testing)  Trust, Mr. G. Santhanarajan  graced the occasion as the Chief Guest while Dr. Sarah Karunakaran (HOD of  Development Management),Dr. Jayanthi Peter(HOD of HRM)and Dr. Amirtha Mary(Consumer Club  co-coordinator )  presided over the function. The meeting started with the invocation of Tamil thai Vazthu followed by the  College Song by the department choir following which Ms. Sarulatha of I MA(DM) introduced the speaker of the day .As a token of gratitude  Dr. Sarah Karunakaran presented a memento to the chief guest.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. G. Santhanarajan emphasized the need for food safety by a power point presentation. He started his presentation with the query on awareness level of food consumed by asking the name of the milk one consume daily for which many brand names such as “Avin”,”Arokya” filled the room. Later he explained how today’s consumer are confused with brands name and nature of the milk critiquing the low awareness on food and importance of food safety among the stake holders who are government, traders and consumers.

The session moved on of how easily consumers are lead towards misinterpretation which threatens the food safety through presenting the sample of ‘Dove bar’, ‘Groundnut oil’ and ‘Gingerly Oil’ used only for lighting purpose which were mislead as cooking oil by their advertisements. He also discussed about the importance of Food hygiene where a food which is pure gets contaminated the minute it’s wrapped by newspaper from nowhere. He also shared his experience in ensuring food safety for the citizens which includes the closing down of “Gold Appam”.He concluded his speech encouraging students to be aware of their consumer rights and to be proactive consumers by denying to buy adulterated and unsafe food and to question unfair practices.

Dr.Jayanthi Peter in her felicitation address appreciated the essence of food security and thanked the guest speaker for the enlightening the audience through his interactive session and his ability to answer patiently to student’s curious questions.

The gathering ended with the vote of thanks by Ms. Priyadharshini of II MA (HRM) followed by the National Anthem.
